SS Credit Heat Island Effect-Nonroof, Requirements Option 2 requires that 75% of the spaces be under cover. The question states a 75-car parking deck exists (under deck parking qualifies as under cover). Thus, no more than 25 non-covered spaces are allowed in order to meet the requirements.100 total spaces X 75% = 75 spaces under cover to meet SS Credit Heat Island Reduction.

Pedestrian-oriented paving or turf areas count. Note athletic fields with turf grass DO count toward this credit, but there is a limit to how much turf grass the project can have for the credit. Outdoor space minimum: 30% of the total site area (including building footprint). Of that 30%, 25% must be vegetated (not turf grass) or have an overhead vegetated canopy (such as trees).

A project in the design phase may have to create or modify an ESC plan for certification. A project in the construction phase that doesn't have a compliant ESC plan cannot be LEED-certified, since the prerequisite can't be met.

This is the best strategy.

Any roof used to shade or cover parking must (1) have a three-year aged SRI of at least 32 (if three-year aged value information is not available, use materials with an initial SRI of at least 39 at installation), (2) be a vegetated roof, or (3) be covered by energy generation systems, such as solar thermal collectors, photovoltaics, and wind turbines. When considering rainwater management look at LID/GI strategies. Only the vegetated roof accomplishes both goals.

Here is one of those questions for which a portion of the requirement is buried into the reference guide itself rather than in the rating system documents. Motorcycle spaces DO count as parking spaces. Bicycle spaces DO NOT count as parking spaces Total parking is based on what is in the LEED Project Boundary (not off-site parking). The question said 84 spaces are on site. That is the starting point - 84 spaces within the LEED project boundary. 4 of those spaces are for motorcycles, so there are still 84. 4 of those spaces are for bicycles - subtract those to get to 80. 80 X 75% = 60 spaces need to be covered.

The intent of the credit is 'To create exterior open space that encourages interaction with the environment, social interaction, passive recreation, and physical activities.' Outdoor space must be physically accessible to encourage use and phyiscal activity. If a project has many sharp holly bushes or vines, for example, people can't walk through the space and thus that doesn't meet the intent of the credit.

This is an issue with urban projects. There may not be a greenfield.

There are exemptions from uplight and light trespass requirements. A helipad at a hospital is one of those excemptions. Check the rating system requirements for the complete list of exempt lighting.

The project cannot earn the credit because the site was originally a Greenfield site, and the building plan has a zero-lot-line (no setback). The credit requires a 40% preservation of the greenfield area on the site if such an area exists.

The space must include direct pedestrian access from the school.

30% of the site including the building footprint must be restored. 174,240 X 0.3 = 52,272 SF

Because the assessment is completed early in the project, it allows the project team to identify synergies with other LEED credits.

Place a minimum of 75% parking spaces under cover. This project has a total of 450 parking spaces; all other numbers are not relevant. To meet the requirements of this credit the project can place 338 parking spaces under cover - underground will qualify since the ground does not contribute to the heat island effect. If the parking were covered by a material, that material would have to have an initial SRI of at least 39 or three-year aged SRI of 32.

If a project has a FAR of at least 1.5, a green roof counts toward the 30% required restoration of the previously developed area. 80,000 SF (7,432 m2) X 30% = 24,000 SF (2,230 m2) 24,000 SF - 8,000 SF = 16,000 SF

This choice is exempt from the requirements. It is not a case you would use to modify the lighting boundary.

Habitat and soil restoration is required.

For Option 1 Path 3, projects must manage the rainfall for the 85th percentile of rain events. For this option, the project must have a density of at least 1.5 FAR. The other choices are all good LID/GI strategies, but they are only optional means of rainwater management.

Shared open spaces, such as a park, that are used by multiple buildings within the same site master plan that are not LEED projects can be included in the open space and vegetation calculation.

Teams must do three things for the credit: 1. Meet uplight requirements 2. Meet light trespass requirements 3. Meet internally illuminated exterior signage requirements

Prior to any design, the project team must determine what lighting zone the project is in and justify why that lighting zone was selected.

For exemplary performance, a project must achieve both Option 1 and Option 2 of the credit, and for Option 2, 100% of the parking must be under cover

The strategies used must manage 100% of the runoff volume for the entire developed site.

Comparisons can be made to other materials in the Cool Roof Rating Council Standard. Also samples can be sent to labs for testing.

When a school is providing space, contracts are used for Option 2, which requires 2 dedicated-use spaces in the building. Access to toilets after normal school hours is required. Some of the potential shared facilities include: commercial office; health clinic; community service centers; police office; library or media center;parking lot; and one or more commercial businesses.

This would not count toward joint use

For the prerequisite, project teams will always follow the more stringent of local code vs. the CGP. This is based on the elements in each, so if the local code is only more stringent in one particular area, the entire local code doesn't take precedent, only that one area does. If the local code is missing something that is in the CGP, the CGP should be followed.

Option 2 can be used by project teams if it is feasible for the team to research what the natural land cover conditions may have been. Natural land cover conditions indicate the vegetation and soil conditions that might have existed prior to the alteration for development activities by people. This information can be found through conservation or water resource organizations, historical societies or historic preservation groups, libraries, colleges and universities, private historic mapping companies, and various government agencies. Just looking around at nearby sites would not be an acceptable way to replicate the site's natural land cover.

This type of area can be excluded. The remaining choices are all types of areas that would have compacted areas that need to be restored.

The next step is using the second equation.

This is very important when doing calculations. Minimizing side lighting reduces light pollution. Minimizing the quantity of lights will help.

The purpose of the site assessment is to inform the decision making process. The result of the site assessment can help inform major elements of the design such as the building location and orientation.

This helps with sedimentation control. This helps with erosion control. This helps with both erosion and sedimentation control.

If the project requires a CGP, the project team has a streamlined path for complying with the prerequisite. No additional ESC plan is needed.

The guidelines will help tenants design and build sustainable interiors and adopt green building practices

If there is a reason the lighting boundary doesn't have to match the project boundary, the project team will need to support the reason for the change.

This type of question will likely include additional, extraneous information to cause confusion. For Option 2 Financial Support, the requirement is as follows: $0.40/SF ($4/m2) for the total site area including the building footprint. 280,000 X $0.40 = $112,000

Separate entries to the spaces intended for joint use

Both the natural land-cover volume and the runoff volume under postdeveloped conditions are needed.

The three options have different volume runoff requirements.

Wetland or naturally designed ponds count as open space if the side slope gradients are 1:4 or less (not more)
